A suspected irritant gas attack at a school in the southern German city of Munich left 17 students injured on Thursday, with eight reportedly in serious condition, local authorities said.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident. According to Munich police and fire department reports, the incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. local time (1030 GMT) at a school in Allach district.

Several students experienced coughing, eye irritation, and respiratory issues shortly after. Emergency services responded quickly, evacuating the entire school building.

The 17 affected students were transported to local hospitals for further medical evaluation and treatment. No hazardous or toxic substances were detected during a search of the premises, and the building was reopened after a safety assessment.

Police said preliminary findings suggest that an unidentified individual may have sprayed an irritant gas inside the school. The case is being treated as a criminal assault.
