Chilean President Gabriel Boric has dispatched Interior Minister Álvaro Elizalde to Buenos Aires following the “serious” disturbances that broke out last night in the stands of the "Libertadores de América" stadium, which hosted the Copa Sudamericana match between Independiente and Universidad de Chile.
Boric announced on Thursday that, in response to the “unacceptable lynching” suffered by some of his compatriots, he instructed the Interior Minister to travel to the Argentine capital to personally monitor the situation of the injured, as well as that of nearly one hundred Chileans who were detained.
“Violence has no justification, from either side, and we are going to protect the rights of our citizens regardless of the responsibilities that justice may establish,” the Chilean president stated on X.
The second-leg Round of 16 Copa Sudamericana match between Independiente and Universidad de Chile had to be suspended shortly after the start of the second half due to violent clashes in the stands, which left around twenty people injured, some seriously.
Boric had already spoken out hours earlier about the events at Independiente’s stadium, blaming both groups of violent fans and the stadium’s security personnel.
“Justice must determine who is responsible,” he also wrote on the aforementioned social network.
At the time of the riots, the match was tied 1-1, with Universidad de Chile leading 2-1 on aggregate.
