Many years back, I remember passing through customs when an immigration officer looked at my passport (which included a photo of me years younger with very long hair) and then, upon handing it back, simply said: “oh, and you were such a pretty girl”. I walked away surprised and confused. 🐛🐛🐛🐛🐛🐛🐛🐛🐛🐛🐛🐛🐛🐛🐛🐛 I had recently come off of filming #GardenOfEden with @thejackhuston and @caterina_murino_official, where I played the character of #Catherine. In the story, she struggles with finding her own identity by changing her appearance (drastically for the times, then, by cutter her hair shorter and shorter; eventually to it being shaved by the end of the story). And it was INCREDIBLE. The entire experience of my head being shaved. The excitement. The liberation! The transformation from what I was into what I could choose to become. A new beginning. 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋 And it all became reduced to something so weird, unusual, and unfortunate for me by this man’s comment. Somehow, my hair defined me. I experienced how others regarded me as “crazy”, “wild”, or “she must have been high and lost her mind and just shaved it off”. Women would tell me “wow, I wish I could do something like, but I wouldn’t know how to feel if I didn’t have my hair”. Mind you, this was a choice I made for a character I played, but nonetheless, it was an awesome social experiment and experience for me. I felt seen in a way I had never been, and although it was challenging at times, I had never felt more FREE! It’s a funny thing how secure we can become in one simple way of being. I guess I’ve always struggled with that, so why not “try it all”? ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ But I’m GRATEFUL for the experience. I’m GRATEFUL for the misunderstandings. I’m GRATEFUL for the challenge. Because the thing that I’ve always appreciated the most, that has come out of my life’s experience, has been the KNOWLEDGE and NEW PERSPECTIVE it has brought. And THESE items are priceless. 👌🏼✨ #MindfulMonday #MenaMonday #MondayMotivation #WeDefineOurselves #YouDoYou #BeWhoYouAre
